In brief: Vaginitis

Vaginitis means irritation of the vagina.
This can be from injury, from yeast overgrowth, from an imbalance in the types of bacteria growing there, and from hormonal imbalances (typically hormonal deficiencies). A history and physical exam, and maybe a lab test by blood, urine, or a slide of a vaginal swab might be used to tell you exactly what is going on.

In brief: Few ways

A pelvic examination in which the vaginal tissue and cervix is examined.
There is a test called a Wet Mount in which a sample of vaginal secretions is tested and looked at under a microscope. There are also laboratory testing with culture or PCR ( DNA ) testing for bacteria/yeast that cause vaginitis

In brief: Wet mount

Laboratory testing such as "sure-swab" can also be very helpful.
