I've had a sore throat and cough along with other cold symptoms for about 3 weeks. What can I do to get rid of it?

See a doctor. Since you've had the symptoms for 3 weeks you need to see a doctor to get a diagnosis and see what treatment is needed. At this point there is probably no OTC medication that will help.

Mild cold symptoms (congested, tired, cough) but no sore throat. Walk-in clinic nurse diagnosed strep after quick test. Should I get 2nd opinion?

Just get treated. Strep infections can be mild. The test isn't perfect and could be wrong. Or you might be colonized (i.e. carrying strep) without symptoms, and it has nothing to do with your cold. However, it's best to be treated with an antibiotic if the clinic recommended it. Better safe than sorry! Read more...

4 yo son recently diagnosis with strep (+ rapid) fever and sore throat are getting better after 24 hrs of abx. No cold symptoms but now has dry cough; related?

Maybe, maybe not. Typically strep throat alone rarely produces cough--there is almost always something else involved when a cough joins an infected throat such an a sinus infection or 2nd illness (not previously appreciated until the strep begins to improve) such as mycoplasma. The antibiotic for strep will not treat mycoplasma infection; therefore, the best advice is to call your md noting this change in symptoms. Read more...

Could I have pneumonia? I have had cold symptoms for the past 3 weeks. I have a constant cough and have had a sore throat. For the past 3 days my chest has really been hurting. It gets worst when I cough and breathe in deeply

You . You certainly could have pneumonia, but it's nearly impossible to make this diagnosis without being examined, possibly having an x-ray. Cough that lasts 3 weeks is less likely to be pneumonia, although the virus that causes the illness you've had can leave you susceptible to pneumonia. Hopefully you can get checked out by your doctor sooner than later and get some relief from this. Read more...
