In brief: Herpes simplex

Yes you can be tested for the presence of antibodies to this virus, although the assessment of whether it is types 1 or 2 cannot be reliably determined by antibody testing.
If you have antibodies it means that the virus is in your body in a latent form. It may or may not ever produce active lesions. There is no way in which to predict this.

In brief: Yes

Lots of people say never had an outbreak yet they test positive.
That means in the past they were exposed to virus and developed antibody. It is hard to say if it is permanent imunity or latent infection. Thats why it s better to get tested and get proper advice. There is a chance to transmit the disease further without any symptoms. Herpes infection in usa( genital herpes) affects 1 in 4 people.
