In brief: Obesity

Excessive formula delivers excessive calories thus leading to obesity.
There are studies that show excessive weight in infancy can lead to obesity in childhood - which can lead to various other medical problems. Sometimes a baby cries - it is not always related to hunger.

In brief: Based on body wt/age

How much formula to give babies depends on thr body weight and age New borns and babies who are not on any baby food till the age of 4to6 months usually babies need 2.
5 oz per lbs of body weight or about 5oz per kgm It is not very rigid as some babies may need less or little more

In brief: AAP Recs

Generally, by the time the child is old enough to drink 32 oz of formula per day they are also of the age that they should start being fed from a spoon.
Cereal, fruits, veggies all become an important source of calories for the growing child and actually need less formula. Excessive feeding can lead to weight problems in the young child.

In brief: Amy of food

Std formula is manufactured to have 20 cal/oz.
so if child eats 32 oz/day gets 640 cal/day. If assume avg wt of infant in 1st yr is about 8 kg then should get 800 cal/day. By that time getting other than liquid formula so that is the reasoning behind the recommendation.
