Can you take both Prilosec and Zantac (ranitidine) for acid reflux?

Gerd. These medications have differing mechanisms of action and usually it's not necessary to take them together although I don't think it is harmful to do so. Zantac (ranitidine) has a quicker onset of action and thus relieves heartburn quicker, but overall, taking prilosec daily is more effective for most patients but should there be breakthrough heartburn, taking a zantac (ranitidine) in addition for quick relief may help.
Sure. The two medications have different mechanisms of action and can work together to control your symptoms. They can be safely taken together.
Yes if necessary. Zantac (ranitidine) is an H2 Blocker; Prilosec is a Proton Pump Inhibitor (PPI). They both inhibit acid production in the stomach, but Prilosec is more potent. Both are available in over the counter doses. It is rarely necessary to take both. You can start with an H2 blocker, then try PPI if no improvement. Reducing caffeine, alcohol, smoking, spicy/greasy foods, and eating before lying down are important.

I take Prilosec and Zantac (ranitidine) for acid reflux problems, my symptoms r better (chest, etc)But when I take Prilosec it seems it gets hard for me to swallow.

GERD. Gerd can cause difficulty swallowing, so it is difficult from your description to tell whether you have insufficiently treated Gerd or if you're having a problem with the Prilosec itself. Your best bet would be to see the doctor who recommended the Prilosec to determine if you should switch medicines or if you need further evaluation. You can use the Zantac (ranitidine) and/or Tums in the meantime. Good luck. Read more...

I have taken Ranitidine for acid reflux and stomach discomfort for a long time. I can get omeprazole cheaper. Would it be a comparable substitute?

Use what works. Every human's body responds differently to medications such as H2 blockers or PPI's: it's ok to start with omeprazole. It's ok to work up to a maximum dose for 1 month. If it doesn't work; make a change after 1 week. Lastly, drug companies all have literature on why their product is best........but each patient responds differently. Read more...
