In brief: Negative colonoscopy
Irritable bowel syndrome is caused by alternating unbalanced signals from the brain.
One overstimulates peristalsis (bowel contractions)leading to diarrhea. The other one stops it, leading to constipation. My view is that this can be a forerunner of ulcerative colitis. It is the autonomic nervous system that is at fault and the commonest cause is poor diet.

In brief: Functional tests
Irritable bowel syndrome is the multifactorial consequence of hormonal, immune system and nervous system dysfunction resulting from genetic predispositions and dietary and environmental insults.
The predominant symptoms like diarrhea cramps constipation are the result of autonomic nervous system instability. Pts like you may benefit from a metabolically directed approach.
