In brief: Family practice
The main difference is that a family practice dr finished a 3 year residency in family medicine specialty.
General practice dr is an older term they didn't do a residency but went right into field practicing they generally did everything including OB and surgery. Now the two are close in their scope of practice.

In brief: GP v FP
Only nomenclature.
Several years back, someone decided that fam. Practice was a more friendly term and it found political correctness.
