In brief: Several reasons
Normally the sinuses drain into the nasal cavity.
In some patients drainage can be inadequate because of scarring, tumor or congenital reasons. Alternatively other patients suffer from chronic mucosal inflammation due to allergies, recurrent upper respiratory infections, smoking or other irritants. Both conditions can cause recurrent sinus infections.
