2 doctors agree
In brief: Extra chromosome
In trisomy 18 the patient has an extra chromosome 18.
This genetic disorder frequently causes heart and kidney defects. They may have a small head and jaw and usually have severe developmental delay. Here is a link http://www.Trisomy18.Org/site/pageserver?Pagename=whatist18_whatis.

In brief: Non-disjunction
When cells divide to form an egg,the nl chromosomes (Chms) line up in pairs & one of each (23 pairs) goes to the egg .
When the 18 Chms do not separate & 2 end up going to the egg, it will have 22 single Chms & a double 18 that combines with 23 single Chms brought by the sperm.Edwards syndrome represents 22 pairs & one triplet (18).The extra confuses the cells, resulting in malformations/disability.
