In brief: Yes

Early on, your baby may be too sick or too immature to safely feed by mouth.
As they get better and more mature they usually develop the complex synchronized reflexes necessary to feed safely by mouth. Most nicus encourage parents to provide "cares" (e.g. Diaper changes, feeding, holding, etc.) as early as possible because it facilitates bonding and, eventually, successful discharge to home!

In brief: Yes

Generally the healthcare providers in the nicu want to promote breastfeeding and breastmilk intake for your baby.
However there are some medical conditions in which a baby cannot feed as normal. Ask your doctors and nurses specifically about feeding and clearly express your wishes.
