In brief: Root canal or ext

The primary factor in determining if a tooth needs to be extracted or have a root canal is what we call "restorability".
This is essentially determining if the tooth can stay functional and if a crown can be placed on the tooth after a root canal. If there is a fracture or too much decay, your dentist may recommend extraction over root canal therapy.

In brief: Experience and exam

Root canals on average last 7-15 years.
If in doubt, have the tooth extracted and have a dental implant placed. Implants last forever. In the long run it is a much smarter and cost effective option.

In brief: If it is restorable

The tooth has decay present.
The question is if the tooth can be built back to salvage the tooth? If yes, then a root canals is needed and later a crown. If not, then the tooth will need to be extracted.
