In brief: Test adrenal fxn.

This test is to check on whether or not your adrenal glands are working right.
It is produced and secreted by the anterior pituitary gland. It is often produced in response to biological stress. Its action is to increase production and release of corticosteroids. A deficiency of acth results in secondary adrenal insufficiency and an excess of it results in cushing’s syndrome.

In brief: Cushing syndrome

It may be part of the workup for cushing syndrome (excess production of cortisol - and adrenal steroid hormone).
If the cortisol level is high, the acth helps localize the problem.
