In brief: Anticoagulation

The primary treatment is anticoagulation .
This usually begins with a short acting medication like Heparin that is given iv. Sometimes patients are given a version of this in subcutaneous formulation. Coumadin (warfarin) which is an oral anticoagulant is then started and this will continue for either three or six months depending upon the circumstances surrounding the dvt.

In brief: Blood thinner

There are many options and you want to discuss them with your doc.
Ask about benefits and risks about the different option - enoxaparin, warfarin, apixaban and so on.

In brief: Anticoagulation

Generally "blood thinning" is the standard of care, however if the blood clot is large, it can be removed or disolved with minimally invasive procedures.
Sometimes a filter can be inserted to prevent the blood clot from going to the lungs.

In brief: An Anticoagulant

Dvt are treated with anticoagulants.
Acutely Heparin is used. Then the oral anticoagulant warfarin/coumadin is used. The duration of anticoagulation depends on several factors. Factors can include location and size of the DVT and whether the DVT was secondary to an acute event, like surgery vs. A chronic condition that increases your risk for DVT long-term, ex. Clotting disorder.
