In brief: No single best way
Depression is a real disease that can and should be treated through a multi-faceted approach, taking into account what works best for the individual patient.
The many treatment options include counseling and therapy, medications, exercise, seeking new hobbies or activities, meditation, spiritual counseling, and many others. Seek professional assistance to discuss these, and other, options.

In brief: Two ways
The two primary forms of treatment for major depression are antidepressant medications and psychotherapy (talk therapy).
Being depressed or having a low mood may or may not fulfill our diagnostic criteria for major depression. There are different forms of depression as well. I suggest starting by seeing your local medical doctor as there are some common physical problems which can cause low moods.
