In brief: Avoidance

of allergen is always the best.
Guideline recommends * Keep indoor relative humidity to 65% /day would allow mites to live. *Vacuum at least 1x/wk. (include upholstered furniture) *Encase mattress , box spring, pillows in densely weaved microfiber encasings *Remove drape, carpeting whenever possible. *Launder bedding at least 1x/wk *Allergy shots if necessary.

In brief: Dust Allergy

Zyrtec (cetirizine) is a pretty safe medication and I have a lot of patients on it for a prolonged period of time.
Of course, it is difficult to keep a child away completely from dust, but avoidance is really the most effective way to treat any allergy. Pillow covers, ionic particle trappers and "constant" vacumning can help decrease exposure. Good Luck!

In brief: Air quality

Dust mite allergies will only become symptomatic when there is sufficient exposure.
The air quality in the home must be optimized. That means using a HEPA vacuum at least several times weekly. Furnace and air conditioner systems should have HEPA filters as well. And in severe cases, carpeting may need to be removed.
