In brief: Doubtful

Psa screening of asymptomatic men has not been shown, conclusively, to reduce prostate cance mortality in the us population.

In brief: Controversial

Psa is our only screening test now and may be raised in multiple conditions other than cancer. The death rate for prostate cancer has dropped during the psa era, but no definitive answer is now available.

In brief: Yes, saves lives

With all its imperfections, psa is still the best surrogate marker. There is next generation psa testing coming in the future.
Screening alone, without treating does not save lives. A recent published article from united kingdom demonstrates this concept beautifully. Some argue we may be overtreating in the usa. But certainly screening and treating saves lives.
