In brief: Determine spread
The staging of any cancer, including vaginal, is to give an assessment of the spread of the disease.
Stage 1 cancer is confined to the affected organ. Stage 2 is spread beyond the vagina but not to lymph nodes. Stage 3 is spread to lymph nodes in area around vagina and stage 4 is spread to tissues distant from the organ like bone or liver.
