In brief: Swollen glands

The submandibular glands make saliva.
They are normally fairly large (about the size of a walnut). As one gets older, the glands sag down lower into the neck and become prominent. If glands are enlarged, & symetric, then cancer is unlikely. Enlarged glands can be seen in many disorders - obesity, bulimia, alcoholism, diabetes, sjogrens, sarcoidosis, certain meds -- see ENT for evaluation.
