In brief: Scarring of the live

Cirrhosis is the end stage of liver damage that can result from many causes, including alcohol, drugs, hepatitis b & c, and obesity, associated with metabolic syndrome.
Mild to moderate changes in liver pathology such as 'fatty liver' can usually be reversed. Cirrhosis is a permanent condition that requires medical management including monitoring, careful selection and dosing of medications.

In brief: That depends

Cirrhosis is scaring of the liver. This can be caused by drugs, alcohol and viral hepatitis.
Cirrhosis can be seen on ultrasound, CT scan or liver biopsy. Chronic inflammation can lead to scaring which leads to cirrhosis which can be a precursor to liver failure or cancer.

In brief: Advanced liver scar

Cirrhosis is a pathologic definition describing the amount of scar tissue within the liver. Sometimes the definition can be made without a liver biopsy based upon the clinical presentation.
Cirrhosis is the end result of ongoing liver damage from any cause (ie. Alcohol, hepatitis c, others). Not everyone with cirrhosis will develop complications of liver failure though medical follow up is needed.
