In brief: Imaging or biopsy
Hepatocellular carcinoma (or hcc) can be diagnosed with imaging studies such as ultrasound, CT scan, mri, and angiography.
Usually two studies are needed to confirm the diagnosis. In some cases a liver biopsy is needed. An Alpha fetoprotein blood test can assist with the diagnosis but by itself is not helpful.
