In brief: Night terrors

The episodes at night sound like sleep terrors which are common in children.
He is asleep when this is happening so there is nothing to worry about as long as he is otherwise doing well. Rarely abnormal behaviors at night can be a manifestation of seizures. If these episodes are at predictable times of the night you can sometimes prevent them by waking the child just before they usually happen.

In brief: Night terrors

Night terrors can occur from infancy through adulthood; 1-6% of kids have them. It's most common between 4-12 years for kids and between 20-30 years for adults.
Most childhood onset sleep terrors resolve by adolescence. Other than ensuring that there's nothing in the crib your baby could bang on, there is not much to do except make sure that your baby has a consistent sleep schedule.
