Are shingles contagious if you've had chicken pox before?

Confusing question. You cannot catch shingles from an affected person but if susceptible, you could get chickenpox. If you have had Cpx before you will not be at risk from this person. Shingled differs from Cpx in being less contagious. The germ will not be in their saliva or a cough, just in the debris from the sores.

What are shingles and does it run in the family or just if you've had chicken pox before? Is it deadly or contagious?

The latter. Shingles are the adult form of chicken pox - you had regular chicken pox as a kid, and later in life the virus is reactivated, but only along one nerve, on one side of the body. It is contagious only to someone who has never had chicken pox. It is deadly only in very old or very debilitated patients. Read more...
Shingles also known. As herpes zoster is a reactivation of the chickenpox virus often decades later after the chickenpox and occurs in about 30% of people during their life. Mom has shingles. I've never had chicken pox. Is it contagious?

Yes, by contact. Chicken pox and shingles are due to the same virus (the zoster virus). If a person has no good immunity to the zoster virus (never caught chicken pox, is immunosuppressed, never got the vaccine, or got the vaccine but didn't make enough antibodies) then he can get a case of chicken pox from the virus in the open, moist skin lesions of the shingles patient. One can get his antibody level checked. Read more...
Possibly. Your mother likely had you vaccinated against the chickenpox, since it was widely available by the mid 90's. If so you are likely immune. Shingles is the same virus but is not as likely to pass. Direct exposure to the weeping sores can, but not a cough or her saliva. Avoid the sores and you will avoid it. You may want to check & see if you were vaccinated. Cpx is dangerous for any adult. Read more...

Is shingles just as contagious as chicken pox?

No. Chickenpox can be passed by both airborn droplets in a cough and the debris from a leaking blister. Zoster does not involve a phaze with virus in your mucous so airborn spread is not likely;however, it can be passed by direct contact with the debris from leaking blisters. Read more...

Is shingles contagious to someone who hasnt had chicken pox?

Possibly. The debris from the shingles sores can give chickenpox to a susceptible person. The shingles patient is not secreting the germ in their saliva, as they would during chickenpox. So if the sores are covered or the material is kept away from susceptible people, transfer will not occur. This is quite different from chickenpox, where airborne droplets easily spread the disease before the kid breaks out. Read more...

My dad got the shingles at age 30. Can I get it early to? At age 18? I've had chicken pox when I was 5. I'm 18 now

Maybe, maybe not. Shingles are a curious problem that happens when the chickenpox virus emerges from a state of hibernation and travels down a nerve root to the skin. It has been known to happen from infancy to old age and the trigger for its occurrence is not always evident. There is no reason to consider you more or less likely to have it when your parent did at a young age. Read more...
