Is hand foot mouth disease in infants dangerous. My son had it he is 2 and my 9 week old just noticed spots on her feet?

Watch hydration. Hand, foot, mouth disease, is caused by a virus and it is quite common in childhood. For the most part it will resolve on its own, but as you develop the same lesions on the throat, it may make it painful to swallow and babies may become dehydrated. Offer smaller more frequent feeds, see if your baby will drink cool temp. Formula and offer pedialyte frequently. If concerned, see your doc.
Maybee. The disease is a virus and will pass on its own with time. In an infant, the mouth sores may hurt so bad that they might not eat or drink. Dehydration is a big problem. If mouth sores, give infant tylenol (acetaminophen) or advill 20 minutes before feeding to stop the pain. Do not exceed the maximum dose per day.

My infant and toddler both have hand foot & mouth. Are they still contagious once the spots appear? Also my infant is 9mths old. Dangerous or ok?

Hand Foot and Mouth. Hand, foot, and mouth disease is usually not serious. The illness is typically mild, and nearly all patients recover in 7 to 10 days without medical treatment. Complications are uncommon except for dehydration. Hand foot and mouth is contagious roughly for a few days before the symptoms appear untill they start to feel better and the spots and ulcers have healed over, so usually about 7 to 10 days. Tiny red spots back of 3 yr old throat, tummy pain, high fever, no appetite. Doc says hand foot mouth. But what else could it be and can I look out 4?

Strep throat. Strep usually causes abdominal pain; but if he had a strep test and it is negative, likely the doctor is right and it could be hand-foot-mouth. Feed soft lukewarm foods and plenty of room temp liquids, nothing scratchy, acid or carbonated and use Acetaminophen for discomfort--should be better in a few days. It is possible to have both. Other considerations. I agree that your child may have Strep, another viral infection or a possible pulmonary infection which can cause abdominal pain and fever. If the symptoms do not improve or if they persist, I would advise a follow up visit. Your physician may obtain a throat culture for Strep. Hand, Foot and Mouth disease is a viral illness which improves with time and usually resolves by the 10 th day. Read more...

I am 24 weeks pregnant & my son may have hand, foot, mouth disease. Is this harmful to my unborn baby?

Potentially. The entero/coxsackie viruses do not readily cross the placenta, although they have been rarely reported to cause placental abruption with dire results. They can lead to maternal dehydration and preterm birth. My recommendation would be to maintain as strict hygienic precautions as possible, minimize contact with your infected son and stay hydrated and rested for a few days/weeks. Notify physician! Doubt a problem. This pattern is so common in childhood you likely had it and are immune. It is sometimes hard to know when you have had it, since you can get it with no spots or spots in several locations. It is passed during the fever in the saliva but can remain in stool for weeks after resolution. Normal hand washing and hygienic practices can reduce your risk. Read more...

HFMD. If your child has hand, foot, and mouth disease, keep him or her away from other people during the first week of the illness. My 10 year old son just diagnosed with hand foot mouth disease. He is generally feeling fine. He still play sports with his father twice a day. Okay?

Sure, but... Hand/foot/mouth is a viral illness usually caused by a virus called a coxsackie virus. Usually we see this in our part of the country in spring/early summer, but we too have seen some cases in our office the past few weeks. Your body will fight this off on its own, so if he's feeling ok, he can be as active as he feels ok for. He is fighting an illness, though, so insure plenty of rest and fluids. Read more...
Fluids/rest. During viral illnesses, I would suggest drinking fluids, monitoring his temperature, and resting more than usual. If he feels well enough, then exercise in moderation should be fine. The illness usually lasts about 7 to 10 days. I am glad that he feels well. Read more...
