Can you tell me if O- blood can be used in a transfusion to a person of any blood type. is there any medical benefit to using a matching blood type over o-?

In brief: Yes

You don't deplete the blood bank's O- supply.
O's do have some plasma in the package and this has anti-A, so if you have blood type A, it will perhaps sensitize your cells though this is usually something that's no immediate danger but can make you sick later.
