Peridontial disease question. Do the hygienists or the periodontist always do scaling?

In brief: What state?

What a hygienist is legally allowed to do varies from state to state.
For preliminary scaling, the periodontist may delegate some duties to the hygienist if allowed in individual state. This will vary from office to office and from case to case. The periodontist is still responsible for all treatment rendered.

In brief: No

Hygienist required a delegation of power from the periodontist in carry out part of periodontal therapy (deep clean, scaling, periodontal charting) and usually is not responsible to the outcome of the entire periodontal therapy.
The final responsibility rests on the periodontist, who can improvise the treatment upon evaluating the results from each step of periodontal therapy.

In brief: Depends.

Many periodontists will do the scaling initially and then once your disease is under control their hygienist will usually do follow up scaling.
This is totally up to the periodontist. Trust your doctor. If he has a hygienist treat you he trusts her and so should you. He will monitor your condition always!

In brief: Varies

The actual scaling and/or root planing (deep cleaning of the tooth usually beneath the gum line) can be done by the hygienist, dentist (some offices may not employ a hygienist) or periodontist.
Who does it is usually determined by each individual office.
