In brief: Many factors
Depends on a lot of things.
Untreated, lyme disease can spread to many organs over weeks & months, yet still not show symptoms. Or, a person could get very ill within days of the tick bite. Untreated, lyme disease does not go away by itself, even if the symptoms get better. Complete treatment is necessary, for weeks if just after tick bite, and months if treatment delayed.

Data strongly suggests that long term antibiotics have no value for this disease.

Except that most patients with chronic lyme disease that have been treated this way by ILADS trained docs get better and most become symptom free. IDSA invented a psychosomatic disorder they named "post Lyme syndrome" to explain away the continued symptoms in their undertreated chronic Lyme patients

In brief: Until it is cured
It can affect any organ system in the body.It does not go away on its own, so symptoms will last your entire life, often progressively spreading and worsening, unless it is effectively treated. The longer it is present before starting treatment the longer it can take to treat effectively & some authorities feel it may be impossible to fully eradicate in some cases.

I agree, unless the patient gets treated within a week of getting a tick bite then the infection can be effectively treated with abt 6 weeks of treatment. Dr. Baker is discussing tx of chronic ,lyme disease whish is very common
