Update. As of now in 2017 the new Gardasil 9 has added material that helps you develop antibodies against 5 additional strains of HPV that brings to 7 the cancer associated strains covered. As cited by Dr.Lopez, this is only helpful if given before exposure to the strains involved. Even though the vaccine helps, it will never eliminate the need to do periodic pap smears to detect early cervical cancer.
Gardasil. In girls and young women ages 9 to 26, GARDASIL helps protect against 2 types of HPV that cause about 75% of cervical cancer cases, and 2 more types that cause approximately 90% of genital warts cases. Also helps against 70% of vaginal cancer and up to 50% of vulvar cancer cases. In boys and young men ages 9 to 26, GARDASIL helps protect against approximately 90% of genital warts cases.
