In brief: Exposures

The majority of eczema is caused by allergies.
Avoiding exposures is one way to reduce flare ups. However, the long term solution is allergy therapy, as it's tough to avoid the world. As foods, environmental agents (dust, mold, pollens, etc.) and chemicals can all cause allergic reactions, any allergy therapy should be able to address all of these areas in order to be effective.

In brief: Eczema is...

....Primarily an allergic condition.
Its can be triggered, however, by a huge variety of different things that vary from person to person. Soaps, lotions, detergents, foods, environmental allergens, chemicals, and many other things can cause flare ups. Additionally, some people are worse if it's warm outside, and others if it's cold. It's very individual.
