Poor defenses. The immune system is the specialized part of our body that protects us against infections, identifying and eliminating microbes and germs that harm our body. It also helps to control tumors. A deficiency of this system can be inherited, caused by a defective gene, or most commonly acquired, caused by an infection such as HIV or measles, or a condition like diabetes or malnutrition.

Labs. Quantitative immunoglobulin levels. Igg thru ige.
Various tests. Lab tests for igg/iga is one test that can detect an immune deficiency, but there are many immune deficiencies which exist, many of which cannot be detected with an igg/iga alone. See an immunologist for an immune evaluation if you have many frequent serious infections.
Humoral Deficiency. Humoral immunodeficiency is a deficiency of circulating antibodies.
Mostly genetic. Rarely acquired. And then congenital, means at birth.
Multiple ways. There are inherited immune deficiencies that manifest at birth or later. There can be acquired immune deficiency such as from an infectious agent as in aids, drugs can cause a temporary immunodeficiency such as used in chemotherapy for cancer or immuno-supressive drugs used for lupus or rheumatoid arthritis. Malnutrition can impair your immune response. Smoking kills some defenses to infection.

Avoid infections. This is a complex issue, as immune deficiencies have many different causes and severities. In general, people with immune deficiencies should avoid contact with sick persons and practice good hand hygiene, and the patient and all close contacts should be up to date on their vaccinations. For questions regarding a specific immune deficiency syndrome, see or speak to a clinical immunologist.
Hygeine. Don't go around them when you are sick. Wash your hands when you enter their house. Encourage good diet and exercise.
It's complicated. The best way for you (as a friend) to help someone with an immune deficiency is to help them find an immunologist who treats these disorders. What we do for the patients is to manage their infections as quickly as possible, try to identify which immune abnormality they have, and sometimes treat them with antibody replacement (ivig), gene therapy or bone marrow transplant.
