This is a poxvirus, 4 -subtypes (mcv1-4), and can be quite contagious.
.Lasting from 3wks to 2-3 months, but an outbreak can last to 18 months. They often resolve without treatment..Attempts at removal such as scraping/rubbing may actually spread the virus more. Topical such as wart cream or 10% benzoyl peroxide(acne cream) can help. Cryotherapy by your doc also can be tried...Good luck..

I agree with Dr. Ngueyn, However, I prefer to treat it if having discomfort, or superinfection (many MC) develops. However, treatment could be a bit traumatic, and irritating. You need to really support your child. Talk to a dermatologist.
