I was on flagyl for a bacterial vaginosis infection 2 weeks ago. Then given diflucan (fluconazole) for a yeast infection. Now I have a white tongue. Help!

Coated tongue. White coated tongue is common with many things, including minor viral infections, changes in nutrition, and various antibiotics. That's probably the cause and it should clear up on its own within a few days. It's harmless, nothing to worry about. But discuss with your doctor if you remain concerned. Read more...

How long do I need to wait before having sex after taking fluconazole for bacterial vaginosis? What do you suggest?

BV or yeast? Fluconazole is used for yeast infections and does not treat bacterial vaginosis; BV usually is treated with metronidazole by mouth. Whichever infection you have and treatment given, it's best to wait until symptoms have cleared up before resuming sex. If sex is otherwise inevitable, for sure use a condom. Sounds like you should recheck with the doctor about your diagnosis and best treatment. Read more...

Needs restest . When people have both BV and yeast it can be hard to get rid of both. Often one comes back. These cases are tricky and will require retesting to make sure the right infection is being retreated. Read more...

Diagnosed with bacterial vaginitis and yeast infection 7daysago. Took Diflucan (fluconazole) and intravaginal AB. White clumps continue and itching back. Monistat3?

Return to doctor. Hmmm... something doesn't compute. Bacterial vaginosis is not effectively treated with intravaginal antibiotics; it requires antibiotic by mouth (usually metronidazole). Fluconazole (Diflucan) usually works well for yeast, but miconazole (Monistat) is very similar and might not help if fluconazole did not. Return to be rechecked by the doctor or clinic where you were diagnosed and treated. Read more...

Can anyone tell me what causes bacterial vaginosis?

Vaginal flora. Bacterial vaginosis is a mild infection of the vagina caused by native bacteria. Normally, there are a lot of "good" bacteria and some "bad" bacteria in the vagina. The good types help control the growth of the bad types. In women with BV, the balance is upset. There are not enough good bacteria and too many bad bacteria.A sign of bacterial vaginosis can be a "fishy" smell, which may be worse after sex. About half of women who have bacterial vaginosis do not notice any symptoms. Read more...

Alternatives. Intravaginal boric acid, a 600 mg capsule once nightly for 14 days may be able to help with your problem. This medication is not FDA-approved for this purpose and must be made by a compounding pharmacy. Boric acid can be fatal if swallowed rather than used intravaginally, so be careful around children. Still it's a worthwhile option when all the antibiotics don't work. Read more...
