There is now also strong research indicating that significant cognitive deficits result from starting to smoke pot as a teenager. This effect does not appear to reverse if a person stops later in life. The research was done on an entire population who were followed from before these effects over many years, so we can determine that the pot use was causing the decline rather than just being correlated with it. The study can be found online at www.pnas.org/cgi/doi/10.1073/pnas.1206820109

In brief: OMG
Mj used over many years can lead to schizophrenia or similar disorders.
Acutely, it impedes judgment and common sense. It causes dysmotivation and compromised cognitive skills. It is often implicated with other drugs in serious motor vehicle accidents. The major problem is that it takes up to 4 weeks for the mj to leave your brain, so its effects can last a long time.
