In brief: Usually joint pain
A gout attack is one of the most severe joint pains that you can experience.
The most common site is the big toe. Other symptoms of gout can be kidney stones (also painful) or chalky deposits in the skin ( painful if large and draining through the skin). Gout can cause joint deformity. The good news is that gout is a very treatable disease with dietary changes and medications.

In brief: Sudden inflammation
Gout refers to the "attack" which occurs when the blood stream can no longer physically hold the uric acid crystals in solution.
The crystals leave the bloodstream and deposit into a joint causing an intense inflammatory response with swelling, redness, increased warmth and intense pain.

In brief: Rapid inflammation
The unique thing about gout is that it usually starts very quickly (reaching maximum pain within 1 day) and at first hits one joint, usually the big toe, with redness and swelling.
Then, the flare resolves in 3-5 days. Subsequent flares can involve multiple joints going up the body, more frequent and longer-lasting. Ask your doctor for diagnosis and treatment.
