Very useful for managing hyperthyroidism (overactive thyroid) and for following patients with thyroid cancer. VERY overused for thyroid nodules - thyroid ultrasound and fine needle biopsy should replace thyroid scans for most patients with nodules and normal thyroid function.

In brief: Several things
Not only does it determine size, position, and function (producing too much or too little thyroid hormone) a percentage uptake of the isotope iodine 123 is performed to classify function.
The thyrod texture is also determined, homogeneous ( all same consistency) or heterogenous ( possibly containing cysts and / or nodules. If a substantial nodule is seen, this would be in some instances biopsied.
