Not so unusual IBS. Irritable bowel is a syndrome complex that spans many etiologies & contributants (see earlier healthtap answers). Often, patients complain of altered stool pattern (diarrhea, constipation, or both), abdominal pain, bloating, gassiness, fullness, distension, nausea, cramps. Symptoms seldom awaken the patient, may improve with stooling, & when uncomplicated are not accompanied by fever or bleeding.
Vary. IBS symptoms vary from patient to patient, but classically includes episodes of lower abdominal cramping, bloating, excessive flatus, and alternating bouts of constipation and diarrhea.
IBS symptoms. Irritable bowel syndrome (ibs) is a condition associated w/ abdominal discomfort, altered /alternating stool pattern, accompanying nausea, bloating, gassiness. Often improved by stooling, ibs is defined by changes in perception of gut distension, motility, sensation. Diet & emotional stress play significant roles here in such patients. Need to rule out first inflammation, ischemia, & infection.
Variable. Irregular bms or alternating diarrhea and constipation, bloating and cramping. But all of these can be caused by things more dangerous than ibs. If you are having symptoms you need to see a GI doctor/colorectal surgeon to real out the more serios diagnoses before deciding this is just ibs>.
Diarrhea. Often alternating with constipation. Commonest cause is "junk" food, caffeine, pop, candy etc.
After. You tried lactose free and wheat free diets, try probiotics.
IBS. Depending in what your symptoms are, treatment can be designed to improve and normalize bowel frequency and minimize discomfort. High fiber diet, exercise and yoga appear to help in ibs. People with severe diarrhea or constipation should consult with an md to determine if they are candidates for newer medications that are very helpful in the treatment.
Different. These are different conditions. Irritable bowel is a chronic condition of abdominal bloating & cramping with alternating diarrhea & constipation controlled with diet & high fiber foods. Diverticulitis is an active infection of small pouches on the colon needing antibiotic treatment.
Not being pregnant. So, the pregnancy tests are quite good. Some breast symtoms are associated with pregnancy and are NOT associatd with IBS. Relief after defecation is much more likely to IBS.
Wow! For one, and if any doubt, the two entities mentioned can be distinguished by a home pregnancy test.
