In brief: Retained fluid

Fluid accumulation in either the middle ear space or the external canal can produce abnormal sounds, discomfort, decreased hearing and occassionally discharge.
Fluid in the ear canal can lead to otitis externa (swimmer's ear) which is treated with antibiotic (with or without steroids) drops, while middle ear fluid treatment is variable depending on appearance and history.

In brief: Eustachian tube

This is likely your eustachian tube trying to equalize the pressure between your ear and your sinuses.
It is more common is you are stuffy with a cold or allergy issues. Heat to the ear can help with pain. Treat congestion and allergies if needed with over the counter medications like antihistamines, allergy tablets, Nasacort (triamcinolone) steroid spray or salt water sprays. If not improving seek evaluation.
