In brief: Yes but
Benadryl (diphenhydramine) does cause sleepiness, and is found in many over-the-counter sleeping pills.
Used here and there, now and then, it is fine for many but not all people. If used regularly, it loses its ability to improve sleep. It does cause daytime sleepiness into the next day.

In brief: Most definitely
...Esp. If you tend to suffer from other "atopic" problems such as seasonal allergies, hayfever, congestion, eczema, mild asthma, sensitive stomach, itching, frequent headaches late in the day, etc.
Did you have tonsils removed, frequent ear infections as a child, or recurrent sinus problems? Then very likely it will help you. Those are very likely related the the reasons you can't get to sleep.
