Is thrombophlebitis the same thing as a deep vein thrombosis?

In brief: Not exactly

Thrombophlebitis (tp) means that there is an inflamed vein with a blood clot in it.
Although you can get a tp in a deep or a superficial vein, we usually think of superficial veins when we talk about tp. The catch is that when someone develops a superfical tp, a deep vein thrombosis will be associated with it up to 25% of the time. Often you can't tell the difference without doing an ultrasound.

In brief: Partly so

Thrombophlebitis is blood clot within a vein, and it may be in the deep venous system (deep vein thrombosis), or in the superficial system (superficial thrombophlebitis).
Anticoagulation is the treatment of dvt, and the superficial thrombophlebitis should be followed with repeat ultrasound to make sure they don't migrate into the deep system.

In brief: Thrombophlebitis

the word thrombophlebitis is synonymous with blood clot in a vein anywhere in the body.
So yes if the clot is in the deep system would be exactly the same
