In brief: Homeopathic remedy
The homeopathic remedy "belladonna" is prepared from a tincture of the whole plant "atropa belladonna, " in the nightshade family.
Producing a homeopathic medicine requires both precise dilution and mechanical shaking ("succussion") between each dilution. Ingested in material quantities, the plant would be very toxic. But the homeopathic remedy is just right to stimulate one's healing system.

In brief: Dilution
Belladona alkaloids, from the plant, in normal concentrations causes pupillary dilation and effects on the sympathetic nervous system. Homeopathic belladonna is a virtually infinite dilution of the intitial active belladonna so there is virtually none left in the bottle.
It is in fact water with nothing in it.

Hello Dr. Bensinger -- Thank you for sharing your thoughts, which suggest that material Belladonna is the only thing of consequence in its homeopathic remedy. By analogy, you can melt down a DVD and say it contains only plastic and a little metal. What of the information (recorded lecture, movie, etc) encoded in that medium? Homeopathic remedies contain information to which living beings (people, animals, even plants) can respond -- if accurately prescribed. It is not magic, but clinically reproducible.
