In brief: AML is a cancer.....

Of the bone marrow (actually a group of cancers) whose precise causes are unknown, but about which we know considerable molecular detail and are learning more each day.
The disease arises from the hematopoietic stem/progenitor cells in the bone marrow when these cells acquire mutations that allow them to escape controls on growth and apoptosis. Subtype info is found on the nci website.

In brief: Very serious disease

It is a type of acute leukemia- a cancer of white blood cells.
It is very serious and life threatening. There are different types of aml. Prognosis will depend on the type, biology ( cytogenetics) age, other comorbidities etc. Majority will be treated with combination of chemotherapy plus minus bone marrow transplantation. Discuss in detail with your oncologist. www.cancer.gov, www.Lls.Org.

In brief: Blood cancer

AML is a type of leukemia.
Leukemia is a type of cancer that occurs in bone marrow and blood. The word "acute" means it progresses faster, as opposed to chronic, meaning slower progression. "myeloid" refers to the type of cell that turns malignant and causes cancer. Another type, for example, is lymphoid. Patients with leukemia should be managed by a hematologist/oncologist.
