Drug interaction. According to epocrates caution is advised because the combination of zyrtec and Benadryl (diphenhydramine) may increase the risknof CNS depression, psychomotor impairment.
Please help! After 3 benadryls (diphenhydramine) and 2 zyrtec, still no relief from allergies. Please help?
Antihistamines +? Bendrly (diphenhydramine) and zyrtec (cetirizine) are both antihistamines and only serve to block histamine. During an allergic reactions, there are many other chemical mediators of inflammation that trigger symptoms. An allergist can assist in finding the right combination of medications for relief. When it comes to antihistamines, more is not necessarily better.
Either, though... Zyrtec is approved for animal allergy. Claritin and Allegra approved for seasonal (pollen) allergy, not pets, though certainly they'd work to some degree as well. Benadryl (diphenhydramine) will work; and though a good proportion will get groggy or sleepy, you may be a person who can tolerate it, and could be more effective than Zyrtec. I wouldn't drive on Benadryl (diphenhydramine) though - it slows reaction times.
Depends. If you only have eye itching, runny nose, or sneezing, either may help but can make you groggy (especially with Benadryl). However if you have asthma or nasal congestion, you are out of luck. If the cat allergy is severe, nothing will work well with continuing exposure and allergy shots may be your best bet.
My son is 10 years, he has a severe pollen allergy. I gave him zyrtec at 5:00pm, can I give Benadryl (diphenhydramine) at 12:00am?
Pollen allergy. You can but you can give him another dose of zyrtec (cetirizine) in the morning if necessamry.
Agree with Dr Novick. Are the tree pollens starting up already where you live? If the combo cetirizine and Benadryl (diphenhydramine) aren't working consider starting a steroid nasal spray (quite safe actually) or could he be coming down with a cold?
Mgt. I would suggest avoiding pollen, by closing the windows, using a HEPA filter indoors. Nasal steroids and saline rinses may also help. I would using Zyrtec or Claritin.
Is it ok to alternate zyrtec (prescribed) and Benadryl (diphenhydramine) (otc) for a few days for an allergy attack. Would be z in am and b at pm. 17mth old male
Maybe. Zyrtec makes some people sleepy. They basically work the same but Benadryl (diphenhydramine) works for just a few hours and usually causes more sleepiness. May want to try Allegra (otc generic is fine) in morning if zyrtec causes sleepiness.
Use one-not both. Zyrtec and Benadryl (diphenhydramine) are both antihistamines-drugs of the same class. Either may work better than the other for your son. Zyrtec typically lasts 24 hours between doses. By alternating, you decrease the effectiveness and gain only an additional likelihood of side effects. Even though the Benadryl (diphenhydramine) is otc, stay with it if it works better, and let your doctor know.
Yes but.... Yes as long as they don't cause drowsiness and thus affecting your alertness. I usually suggest to patients to take something like fexofenadine (allegra) 180 mg during the day and whatever works for them in the evening. Zyrtec causes some drowsiness in slightly over 10% of the people and Benadryl (diphenhydramine) over 30% in my own experience.
Remember the MOA. As an aside, it's important to remember how these meds work. Your allergies are caused by histamine release in the body. Antihistamines block the release of histamine, not its effects. Its important therefore to take allergy medicine prior to experiencing the allergy symptoms. Antihistamines are to prevent allergy symptoms, not get rid of them once they've already shown up.
My friend has a food allergy reaction. We are unable to access Benadryl (diphenhydramine) (in Saudi Arabia). What action can we take? How much Zyrtec can she take?
Look for. Diphenhydramine which is the generic of Benadryl. They should know what that is/have it there. If you try Zyrtec, (cetirizine) take 10mg daily. Best of luck!
2/day. If she has Rash from food allergy, she can take 10 mg of Zyrtec (cetirizine) twice daily. If she has GI upset from food then she should avoid eating any solid food and drink plenty of liquid with electrolytes and stay hydrated. If she is having Respiratory distress, she need to seek the medical advise right away. Hope she feels better soon.
The recommended dose. Take 10mg daily as is the recommended dose. There are several other anti-histamines other than benadryl (diphenhydramine) that could be prescribed to her if the allergy is severe. Certainly avoid the foods first and foremost.
Can I take Benadryl (diphenhydramine) for tomato allergy after I have taken Zyrtec d 12 hours earlier?
They. Both going to block H-1, no harm. Q.
