Can the elderly get depression?

Geriatric depression. Quite common & for variety of reasons, from physical illnesses, limitations, effects of multiple medications prescribed for multiple ailments, distancing from family, coping with loss of friends, realization of aging process & fears of unknown.
Yes. Absolutely, as they endure many losses ( perhaps their own health, death of friends) important with elderly who present w/ new onset memory loss to rule out depression, also known as pseudo-dementia.
Yes. Elderly folks do get depressed and for a variety of reasons. Sometimes, due to a medical illness or condition such as a stroke, depression can be common and can also become quite serious. An elderly person with major depression for example, may quit eating and become malnourished which can then lead to other problems. Excellent antidepressant treatment is available for all ages.
