In brief: 3 differences

Generally speaking, there are three things that differentiate typical from atypical depression.
In atypical depression, people often sleep too much, have an increased appetite, and have "emotional reactivity". That is to say, they will feel happy when something good happens, but then return to depression afterward. Maoi's may be more effective in treatment. Emsam is a patch formulation.

In brief: The classical answer

Is that "typical deprssed" patients felt depressed and had little energy so they slept a lot.
Therefore atypical depressed patients were those who were depressed but did not sleep in excess or could not sleep or rarley had much energy even though they were depressed.
