In brief: Get medical help
Infection of the ear cartilage soft tissue lining is known as perichondritis.
The associated swelling can cause severe pain. If not treated the blood supply to the cartilage can be compromised and the ear cartilage can die. If this happens a significant ear deformity may develop. Treatment may require steroids, pain control and IV antibiotics.

In brief: It depends
You don't just want to treat the pain.
You want to make sure you don't have an infection that needs intervention. On your way to the doctor you may want to take some serious anti-inflammatory like ibuprofen, unless you have a reason that you cannot. If you are diabetic it is more urgent to seek care.

Auricular perichondritis is most commonly caused by bacterial infection and requires prompt antibiotic treatment. There are some unusual causes such as relapsing polychondritis but pain is a stronger indicator of infection or trauma.

In brief: Get to an ER NOW
Perichondritis of the ear needs to be treated aggressively and quickly, because the ear cartilage can be rapidly destroyed by such an infection.
This is common with burns of the ear, usually caused by a pseudomonas bacteria and treated with topical and systemic antibiotics. It is extremely painful and can be extremely deforming to the ear. Get it taken care of immediately!
