In brief: To rule out disease
If an older woman has had abnormal vaginal bleeding or an ultrasound that suggests a growth inside the uterus, inserting an instrument that allows the physician to see the lining of the uterus can help diagnose a polyp or cancer inside.

Dr De la Pena and Mellow are correct. In a postmenopausal patient, a hysteroscopy is a great tool to further evaluate the uterine cavity. This is usually done, in this case, for abnormal bleeding.
