TMJ-TMD. TMJ disorder is the second most frequent cause of orofacial pain after dental pain. The common symptom are: headache, jaw pain, neck pain, eye pain, earache. Proper diagnosis is the key for the successful treatment. This disorder will not resolve on its own with home care. See an orofacial pain specialist for evaluation and treatment. Check site for OFP near you: http://www.aaop.org/
Consultations. Please have your occlusion examined. See an Orthodontist. Malocclusion often associate w TMJ dysfunction. lPlease also see an Oral Surgeon. You may benefit from an occlusal orthotic, an appliance to keep your teeth apart long enough to gain some joint healing.
TMJ. I'm not sure I'd rely on a general dentist to "rule out TMJ" I'd recommend an opinion from a TMJ expert. Any dentist can be a TMJ expert with the proper training and experience. Most commonly, oral surgeons, prosthodontists, and orofacial pain specialists. Ask your MD, your dentist and your dental society for referrals.
