How do we know if a sore throat and nasal congestion is due to allergies or something else? If its allergies would it not be accompanied with fever?

See Allergist. Occasional sore throat and congestion can be due to a virus, but if you notice persistent symptoms all year long or seasonal pattern then you are likely suffering from chronic rhinitis. Allergy symptoms are NOT accompanied by fever. Symptoms include congestion, post-nasal drip, sneezing, itchy/watery nose and eyes, etc. If you would like to determine cause see an Allergist for further testing. Read more...

Re-evaluation . Not adding up, and what is exactly meant by sputum test? and from where was that sputum collected? was it a culture or a smear, was it from upper or lower respiratory tract? it can be a contaminant. Unfortunately there is no magic bullet, you need to be re-evaluated for a cause of your symptoms, better see an Allergist/Immunologist if you have access to one where you live, good luck .
