In brief: Unusual

What kind of side effects? Certainly there are shots that can be given in place of warfarin but that means giving yourself a shot once or twice a day.
The new pills are also a possibility but they have the downside of us not having much experience with reversing their anticoagulant effects if you have a dangerous episode of bleeding.

In brief: Alternatives

Today there are a number of alternatives including both injectables and oral tablets that may be used in place of coumadin/warfarin.
