If you have a strained groin burpees are gonna hurt! I'm not sure I know what you mean by glutes not firing.
If you want to strengthen the glutes squats and lunges are good but WAIT til the groin is better-at least 2 weeks. In the meantime water exercises, Pilates or yoga.
