Oral contraceptives work by preventing ovulation, and it is felt to take at least 2 weeks to be effective in preventing pregnancy.
I usually recommend waiting one whole menstrual cycle before considering yourself protected to be on the safer side. Also, remember that oral contraceptive pills do not protect against sexually transmitted infections, so you may continue to need condoms as well.
